What Is Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover essential inpatient care when you’re hospitalized, recovering, or facing serious medical conditions. It includes hospital stays, rehabilitation in skilled nursing facilities, some home health services, and hospice care — protecting you from high out-of-pocket costs.

What’s Covered & What’s Not

Covered Services:

  • Hospital Stays: Room, meals, nursing care, and medically necessary services.

  • Skilled Nursing Facilities: Short-term rehab after a hospital stay.

  • Home Health Services: Part-time skilled care and therapy at home.

  • Hospice Care: Comfort-focused care for serious illnesses.

Not Covered: Long-term personal care, routine dental or vision, private hospital rooms (unless medically necessary), and everyday prescription drugs (covered under other Medicare parts).

Eligibility, Costs & Enrollment

Who Qualifies: Most people become eligible at age 65. Some qualify earlier due to disability, ALS, or End-Stage Renal Disease.

Costs: Many people get premium-free Part A if they (or a spouse) paid Medicare taxes while working. Deductibles and coinsurance may still apply when you use services.

Enrollment: Automatic if receiving Social Security retirement benefits. Otherwise, sign up online, by phone, or at your local Social Security office. Timely enrollment avoids penalties.
